Signs from Spirit - How to Know When They're Near?

Feeling connected to the spiritual realm can be a comforting and enlightening experience. But how do you know when spirit is near? Recognising the signs of a spiritual presence can help you feel more confident and open to spirit communication.

Signs can be both very subtle or very strong! I’ve had some truly vivid and profound encounters with loved ones who have passed as well as very subtle signs like whispers in the wind.

I’ve experienced dreams where I was engaged in conversations with people that I know that have passed—moments where I just "know" it’s really them (this can happen with animals/pets too!).

Sometimes, I find very specific objects in shops or out in nature appearing before me as if they’ve been intentionally placed there, a gentle message from beyond saying, “Hey, this is for you, from me, I'm still here, I love you.”

There have also been many times when songs play unexpectedly in the car, carrying a message or reminding me of someone special, especially on my birthday or other special occassions.

Unique signs like license plates with the initials of passed family members, or even their full name printed on a truck that drives past—these are unmistakable nudges from the other side.

One of my favorites was discovering a bar of chocolate my husband bought for my birthday, with “Made in Yorkshire” stamped on the front—an incredibly unusual find here in Geelong (from my Grandad who was from the Yorkshire Dales in England)!

On a few occasions, I’ve heard direct voices—clear and distinct—where I knew beyond a doubt it wasn’t just a memory or my imagination, when I awoke I cried as their voice touch every cell within my heart.

These experiences, among many others, have reaffirmed for me that our loved ones are never truly gone; they are simply across the veil and they find ways to communicate and remind us of their presence.

Here are some other common signs to let you know that your loved ones are close:

1. Sudden Changes in Temperature

A noticeable drop or rise in temperature, especially in specific areas, can be a sign that energy is present. Many people feel a cool breeze or a sudden chill when spirits are near.

2. Unexplained Sounds, Noises or Smells!

Hearing faint footsteps, whispers, or knocking when there’s no logical explanation might indicate a spirit’s presence trying to get your attention. Sending a waft of baked bread or cookies was another favourite from my father!

3. Vivid Sensations or Feelings

You might experience a gentle touch, a tingling sensation, or a feeling of warmth or love. These feelings often accompany messages from loved ones or spiritual guides.

4. Sudden Clarity or Intuitive Insights

When your mind becomes clear and you receive sudden flashes of insight or guidance, it can be a sign that spirit is communicating through your intuition.

5. Presence of Symbols or Signs

Seeing repeated symbols, numbers, or messages—like feathers, coins, or specific numbers—can be messages from spirit trying to connect or reassure you.

6. Animals Acting Unusually

Animals are highly intuitive. If they suddenly become alert, stare intensely, or act strangely around you, they may be sensing a spiritual presence.

Trust Your Intuition

Most importantly, trust how you feel.

Spirit often communicates in ways that resonate deeply within us—through feelings, impressions, or subtle signs through our senses. By staying open and attentive, you'll become more aware of when spirit is close, guiding and supporting you along your path.

Spirit will always respects your free will, so approach these signs with gratitude and openness.

When you sense their presence, take a moment to acknowledge and thank them for their guidance too.
