Spooky Sara. As someone fascinated by the spiritual realm, I can't avoid talking about the Ouija Board, can I?!
Are you Ready?! Lets go...
The Ouija board has long been a topic of fascination and fear. Popularised by supernatural movies, stories, and folklore, many people wonder: Is the Ouija board genuinely dangerous, or is it just a harmless tool? (there aren't any lights flashing on and off in this house as I write about the Ouija Board haha).
I’ve been using the Ouija board off and on since I was 9 years old, so to me, it’s simply another fascinating tool for spiritual exploration. However, I believe it must be approached with respect, the right intentions, and careful handling.
I keep one beside my bed, and it doesn’t cause me any worry or fear. As a spiritual tool, I don’t use it that often, but on special occasions—such as a loved one’s birthday or during Halloween—I might give it a gentle dusting off and have a session with my husband or anyone interested in connecting. When used responsibly, I find it to be a meaningful and intriguing way to try and communicate with the spirit world!
Where Does It Originate From?
Historically, the Ouija board is believed to have originated in the late 19th century as a parlor game. Its name is derived from the French and German words for "yes" — "oui" and "ja."
Over time, it became associated with spiritual communication. Movies and stories often depict the Ouija board as opening portals to malevolent spirits or attracting dangerous entities such as the devil. This has led many to feel uneasy or scared about using or even being near one.
Is the Ouija Board Dangerous?
Potential Risks:
Some believe that the Ouija board can invite negative energies or spirits if used carelessly or with bad intentions. For those sensitive to spiritual energies, it might lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, or even unwanted spiritual attachments.
Skeptics argue that the experiences people have while using a Ouija board are often the result of the subconscious mind—known as the ideomotor effect—where involuntary movements influence the planchette or pointer. From this view, the board itself is just a tool, and any frightening experiences are psychological.
Is it Really Scary?
For Some, Yes!
If you’re particulalry sensitive to spiritual energies, or if you approach the Ouija board with fear or negative intentions, it might amplify feelings of unease or attract unsettling energies. Think about someone in a bad mood, they'll be in a bad mood wherever they go and will take that energy around with them!
For Others, No:
Many people use the Ouija board as a fun, experimental and harmless game or a way to connect with loved ones in spirit - like me! When approached with respect, clear intent, and a grounded mindset, it can be a safe experience.
Tips on Using a Ouija Board
Set clear intentions: Know why you’re using the board and what you hope to gain. It is best to be discerning with who you want to use the Ouija Board with if inviting others to join you. The power of intertion is just that - powerful, so make sure you all align.
Create a sacred space: Ground yourself and invite positive energies or protective guides. You may also like to use sage or other herbs to set the energetic space around you, light a candle etc.
Use with respect: Approach it with seriousness and respect, avoiding making fun or being reckless (it's OK to have a giggle though - laughter is the energy of joy and loving spirit love the energy of joy).
Avoid fear: Approach with an open mind and calm attitude; fear can bread fear, so try to keep it to a level of healthy curiosity!
Ask Closed Questions: At first it is easier to ask closed, simple questions, you won't get answers in sentences.
Make notes: Allocate a person to make note of the words/numbers that are shown, even if they don't make sense at first, they might at the end of the session whe you recap.
Know when to stop: If you start feeling uncomfortable or scared, it’s okay to stop and end the session.
At the end: Remember to clear the board and space with sage and bring in clearing energy so that any unwanted energy if it has come through will go right back to where it came from. You can then put it away, wash your hands or rub with rosemary herb or oil.
Whether the Ouija board is scary or not depends largely on your perceptions, mindset, intentions, and approach. Trust your intuition and prioritise your spiritual safety. The power to create a positive, respectful experience is in your hands!
Enjoy!
