Hands about to touch
Hands about to touch

Have you ever had a gut feeling or an intuitive sense that someone close to you might be nearing the end of their life?

It’s a question many people ask when faced with unresolved feelings, mysterious insights, or sudden flashes of awareness. But is there really a way to know when someone is going to die?

My first experience of this was when I was around 14 or 15 years old. My grandparents were going on holiday but came to visit us before they left. As my nanna hugged me goodbye, I had an undeniable knowing inside that I wasn't going to see her again. True enough, my Nana passed while she was away on holiday and I never saw her again.

A few years later whilst at University, a friends parents came to visit. They spend some time togther then as they were leaving, the dad shook my hand, and again, I just knew that he was going to die. And unfortunately he did die of a stroke a few weeks later.

Of course, I don’t go around shaking hands or hugging people just to see if they’re going to die—nor would I want to invade anyone’s privacy in that way. However, there have been moments in my life when I felt that something extraordinary had occurred within my experience—times when the energy or a subtle knowing seemed unmistakable, signaling that something significant was about to happen.

So how did I come to know this "knowing?"

The nature of intuition and premonitions

Intuitive hits or premonitions—strong feelings or visions—about someone’s health or fate. Sometimes, these impressions come suddenly and are difficult to explain.

While some believe that such insights are genuine psychic messages, others see them as heightened empathy or subconscious observations. Regardless of their origin, these feelings can be powerful and emotionally charged.

Do People Truly "Just Know"?

The idea that you can just know when someone is going to die is both comforting and unsettling. For some, these insights come as quiet whispers of awareness—an instinctive feeling that the moment is near. For others, it may manifest as vivid dreams, visions, or sudden emotional shifts.

However, it’s important to remember that such perceptions are often not definitive. They may reflect our fears, hopes, or subconscious cues based on the person’s health or circumstances. Sometimes, these feelings are more about our own emotional processing than a clear prediction of reality.

The Role of Empathy and Connection

Highly empathetic individuals, caregivers, or those who have a close emotional bond with someone may be more aware of subtle changes in energy, mood, or physical condition. This heightened sensitivity can sometimes feel like knowing, but it’s usually a reflection of their deep connection and attentiveness.

Respecting the Mystery

Whether or not you believe it’s possible to know when someone is going to die, it’s essential to approach these feelings with compassion and respect. If you sense that a loved one’s time is near, it can be a gentle reminder to cherish the moments you have and to offer love and support.

When Such Insights Occur

Trust your intuition, but don’t rely solely on it. It’s one piece of the puzzle, not the entire picture.

Be present and supportive and respect someone's privacy and timing. Sometimes, the timing of death remains unpredictable, even to those with heightened awareness.

In Conclusion

While some people feel they just know when someone is going to die, it’s often a complex blend of intuition, empathy, and subconscious perception.

Whether it’s a true psychic insight or a deep emotional connection, these feelings remind us of the profound bonds we share and the importance of being present for those we love.

If you’ve experienced such moments, trust in your sensitivity, but also honour the mystery and the natural flow of life and death. After all, life’s greatest truths often lie beyond what we can fully understand.
